Discoverers

My daughter has been at the nursery since she was 15 months old, and we can’t recommend it highly enough – it’s warm, friendly, professional; our children are safe, happy and thriving. They are involved in all sorts of activities (indoor and outdoor), the meals are delicious, and they love being at nursery.” Roxanne (Mum)

Children arrive in our Discoverers room as they turn 2 years old and will remain with this lovely team until they are about 3 years old. It is an extremely exciting age when so many skills are learnt and so much independence is gained. Our Discoverers have two big rooms they are based in. There are double doors dividing the rooms which are open throughout most of the day for free flow but can be closed at lunch time so that we can create a quiet and peaceful half of the room for naps and a fun busy half for those who are still awake. Potty training often happens at this age and all children have access to toilets and potties which they can learn to use on their own. The Discoverers have their own garden area with three different learning zones as well as making a lot of use of our outdoor classroom.

Our Approach

Turning two often means getting very curious and much more independent and able to easily move from one experience to the next. We make sure that we stimulate children’s voracious curiosity at this age with a variety of zones across our rooms which contain carefully planned and enticingly displayed provocations and invitations to learning. With a strong belief in the environment as the third teacher there are zones for small world imaginative play, a story corner, role play, messy play and loose parts play. Our practitioners work closely with their children planning a mix of adult led activities to teach children new skills and child led opportunities to practice what they have learnt.

We believe that the routines of the day are great learning opportunities for our children and from two years old we start teaching children to serve themselves, help clean up, as well as being able to get their own coat on and tidy away their own toys. We passionately believe in the importance of fresh air and time in nature and all our Discoverers spend time in one of our gardens at least twice a day
